COLUMBUS -- The Lakeview Community Schools Board of Education approved 2008-09 contract negotiations with the Lakeview Education Association Monday night.
The contract includes a 2.83 percent increase in base salaries, which would raise the base salary from $26,500 to $27,250. Individual salaries are based on the district’s salary schedule, experience and education.
The overall increase in teachers’ compensation will be 4.06 percent for the 2008-09 year, according to the contract.
The board also unanimously approved a new free admission policy. Mary Ann Schreiber, board member, proposed an amendment to the policy to provide free passes to the Lakeview athletic booster club officers and their spouses for the duration of their terms.
Schreiber said the athletic booster club officers are involved in extra curricular activities and those who hold the positions should be rewarded.
Ron Keller, board member, objected to the amendment based on the idea that the number of passes in the district needed to be limited.
The amendment passed, 5-1.
According to the policy, in addition to athletic booster club officers and their spouses, all current board members, administrators and their families would receive free admission passes, as would citizens 62 and older living in the district or owning property in the district, unpaid officials such as scorekeepers, public address personnel and photographers and staff members who assist with extra-curricular events throughout the year.
Employees who have completed at least 20 years of service to the district and board members who serve at least two terms will receive a life pass. The board may also grant such a pass to anyone who has made a significant contribution to the district.
Central Conference Faculty Passes and NSAA passes also will be honored.
As for community volunteers, those who assist or help with approved events will be given a family voucher for a future extra-curricular event.
Keller said the policy adjustment should increase staff and patron participation in student events.
“In my opinion this addresses (community involvement) much better,” Keller said.
